Oceanspray (Holodiscus discolor)

Oceanspray is typically found in dry woodland areas. It may be difficult to establish but once established, it quickly becomes a large, clump-forming shrub. Long cascades of white, foamy flowers give it its name, and long gray-green leaves with gray-white undersides show some yellow in the autumn. Normally all stems are formed from a basal crown or from suckers. Oceanspray's very hard wood was traditionally used for making arrows; it was called ironwood. At maturity it can reach to 15’ tall and 20’ wide; partial shade; moderate drought tolerance. Oceanspray provides cover for birds and other small wildlife.
