Black Cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa)

Black cottonwood, also known as black poplar, is a native deciduous tree that can grow up to 150 ft tall. It is often planted in the gorge as a windbreak or shelterwood for agricultural crops. Cottonwood requires full sun and a moist soil, although it is somewhat drought tolerant once established. It's range reaches from sea level to 5000 ft, but grows best in low elevation, moist sites. The cottonwood's seeds are attached to long, white hairs (referred to as cotton) are shed between late May and late June, and disperse readily in the wind. The cottonwood has a good display of color in the fall.
